What We Do

Today, 42% of the global aviation fleet is leased through an aviation finance industry that is largely based in Ireland.  With a view to consolidating Ireland’s global lead in aviation finance and with the needs of other Irish industries in mind, the VAR research partnership has pinpointed operational risk management and asset valuation as being of critical research importance.

The title VAR reflects our research focus as being the crux of the relationship between Valuation and Risk and the investigation of the synergistic relationship between these two disciplines.

Our work seeks answers to the following research questions.

  • What factors drive valuation of privately traded assets (e.g. aircraft) and publicly traded assets (e.g. oil)?
  • What is the price behaviour of assets over time and how best can we model and capture their characteristics?
  • What risk measures should we use in risk management?
  • How do we provide accurate valuations of assets both privately and publicly traded?
  • What are the driving risk factors in ascertaining true asset values?

The VAR partnership is developing a foundation of expertise that underpins the finance industry through the scientific assessment of asset values and operational risk.  Our research programme provides alternative valuation models and assesses new risk measures, combining valuation and risk modelling as they advance their respective sciences.

Through the VAR programme, a new generation of graduates equipped with specialised training and research experience are set to enter the Irish financial services industry, creating a bedrock of indigenous knowledge to secure Ireland’s place at the forefront of the financial services industry.
